Restless Devotion by Nick Thompson
Restless Devotion by Pastor Nick Thompson is a handy little volume with a provocative subtitle: An Urgent Call to Godward Discontentment. This book delivers what it’s title promises. In seven concise chapters, the author addresses the major areas of personal and church life in which Christians must fight complacency in their walk with the Lord Jesus.
Thompson’s plan of attack is straightforward: the exposition of selected Psalms. In his own words:
Psalm 63 to “learn to desire Him”
Psalm 119 to “cultivate a hunger for His Word”
Psalm 51 to “hanker after Christ and all of His saving benefits”
Psalm 84 to “train your soul to restlessly seek His house”
Psalm 126 to “stir up discontented desires for the restorative streams of His Spirit”
Psalm 67 to “transform your vision of the world . . . a passion for every person to worship God”
Psalm 17 “that you may look with longing to a resurrected world”.
The appendix is a helpful primer to learning to pray these Psalms. Thompson selects from each of these gems and gives prayer starters using the ACTS acronym. This will certainly be of help in my struggles to pray according to Gods will. A second appendix with “Suggested Additional Resources” would have been appreciated.
My “aha” moment came reading Chapter 6 (Restless for God’s Mission). Thompson connects the restorative operation of God’s Spirit, refreshing and reviving His people, with the mission of the church to the nations. He writes, “missions is always the overflow of God’s people seeing and savoring His bright, soul-satisfying glory (pg. 87).” “The fulfillment of God’s international mission is the outworking of His bright blessing being freshly experienced by His holy (people) (pg. 88).”
If I am enthralled and rejoicing in God’s glory and saving power, how can I not want my friends, neighbors and family to also experience this and, in turn, glorify Him? How can I not be jealous and zealous for His holy Name!
This is a book to which I will repeatedly turn to assess my spiritual health and stave off the insidious effects of spiritual complacency. It is a read that stirred up my spiritual hunger and discontent.
