The life of Susannah Spurgeon, so aptly recounted in "A Basket of Summer Fruit," inspires the reader to wonder if we suppose ourselves to be farther from heaven than we really ought? To live a consecrated life, as Susannah did, is to pursue holiness so aggressively and sincerely that Christ's presence is a sweet reality in the here and now. As we see Susannah's Christian life unfold in "A Basket of Summer Fruit," it becomes apparent that she was able to endure and even rejoice in extraordinary earthly trials because her similarly extraordinary fellowship with Christ had prepared her to do so. And so, as we count her among the "great cloud of witnesses" (Hebr 12:1), we join her at the throne of Christ and "adoringly bow before Him in wonder at the miracle His love has wrought."
