The Rise and Progress of Religion in The Soul
I was saved out of a radical Dispensational church some 33 years ago at mid life.
I was led to first read the Bible for myself and then to Lloyd-Jones, Bunyan, Goodwin, Edwards, Henry, Owen, etc.
With the exception of Owen I have read most of the works of these godly brothers in Christ. I also read all of G. Mueller’s Narrative, Edward Payson’s works, and widely from Bonar, McCheyne, Ryle, Whyte, etc. all of which I offer only as background for my comments here on Doddridge.
For me, his The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul has been a very great blessing as it recognizes the best points from all of the above authors and puts them into a practical suggested means of daily action along with deep, insightful and scriptural prayers for help for living out the Christian life.
It is a throughly excellent work, in my view, and it’s near unavailable status now even on conservative Puritan Publishers is but one more evidence of “the great Apostasy” which Paul said would be evident in the last days.
May The Good Lord lead many to read it and a few to continue republishing it while there is still a little time left to reap its blessed lessons.
