God's Battle Plan for the Mind: The Puritan Practice of Biblical Meditation (Saxton)
Discovering the Glorious Gospel is the second workbook in Paul David Washer's Biblical Foundations for the Christian Faith series of Bible Studies by Media Gratiae. This workbook can be used as a 9-week study for individuals, families, Sunday school classes, small groups, and churches.
The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the center of human history, the greatest story ever told, and the subject of angelic contemplation (I Peter 1:12). When proclaimed with biblical fidelity, it is the power of God for salvation to every one who believes (Romans 1:16) and the great source and motivation of all true piety (I Timothy 3:16). When its message is distorted, it brings death to the hearers and the gravest of curses to the one who proclaims it (Galatians 1:6-9). For these reasons and many others, the Christian should consider his or her study of the gospel to be a primary and lifelong task. This workbook was designed and written with these things in mind.
The great goal of this study is for the student to have an encounter with God through His Word. Founded upon the conviction that the Scriptures are the inspired and infallible Word of God, this study has been designed in such a way that it is literally impossible for the student to advance without an open Bible before him or her. The goal is to help the reader obey the exhortation of the Apostle Paul in II Timothy 2:15: "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth."
Each chapter deals with a specific aspect of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The student will complete each chapter by answering the questions and following the instructions according to the Scriptures given. The student is encouraged to meditate upon each text and write his or her thoughts. The benefit gained from this study will depend upon the student's investment. If the student answers the questions thoughtlessly, merely copying the text without seeking to understand its meaning, this book will be of very little help.
Discovering the Glorious Gospel is primarily a biblical study and does not contain much in the way of colorful illustrations, quaint stories, or theological treatises. It was the desire of the author to provide a work that simply points the way to the Scriptures and allows the Word of God to speak for itself.
Paul Washer ministered as a missionary in Peru for 10 years, during which time he founded the HeartCry Missionary Society to support Peruvian church planters. Paul now serves as one of the laborers with the HeartCry Missionary Society (www.heartcrymissionary.com). He and his wife Charo have four children: Ian, Evan, Rowan, and Bronwyn He has written many bestsellers, including the Recovering the Gospel series and The Gospel of Jesus Christ tract.
“Paul Washer has provided a sound, biblical substantive theological study for those of us who have been longing for more. Anyone interested in bolstering their understanding of the doctrine of God will find this study immensely valuable. It can also serve to give young believers a solid foundation, or to aid in evangelizing unbelievers.” - Voddie Baucham Jr., Dean of the Seminary at African Christian Universi
