This book originated as seven discourses delivered by the author, who took his theme from Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true…think on these things.” After analyzing the system of morals presented in the Bible and that which is attainable by human reason, Thornwell discusses both man’s duty to love the truth and the characteristics of such a love. He then proceeds to explain the practical outworking of truth as it relates to sincerity, faithfulness, vows, and consistency. These lectures demonstrate Thornwell’s masterful skill as a moral philosopher and gospel preacher.

Author  James Henley Thornwell (December 9, 1812 – August 1, 1862) was an American Presbyterian preacher and religious writer.
