"In republishing this Commentary on the Song of Solomon, little need be said by way of apology; but it is proper to state, that the several notes appended to the work have been written for it by one, who lays not claim to any further merit for himself than that of being a gleaner among the Jewels of the Sanctuary; and he has done this in the humble hope, that should any additional light be hereby thrown on the sacred Word, all the glory will be given to him him to whom all the glory is due. The reader will find under his teaching, who alone teaches to profit, that the little work contains a rich repast of spiritual food - 'a feast of fat things, of fat things full of marrow, and of wines on the lees, well refined.'"
