The Life of George Whitefield, 2 Vols
Description
Publisher's Description: Volume 1 brings the story of Whitefield's life and of the evangelical revival up to the end of the year 1740. Volume 2 follows events onwards until his death in 1770. An outstanding biography, popularly written, and with an urgent message for the present day.
This is really One of the most important biographies of a Christian ever written. The Lord used Whitefield as one of the main catalysts in the First Great Awakening.
At age 26, Whitefield was called "the most brilliant and popular preacher the modern world has ever known." In the wake of his preaching, revival swept across the British Isles and spilled over onto the shores of America. God's accomplishments through George Whitefield are to this day virtually unparalleled. Even during his lifetime Whitefield was considered "the most brilliant and popular preacher the modern world has ever known." In the wake of his fearless preaching, revival swept across the British Isles, and the Great Awakening transformed the American colonies. When Whitefield died at age 55, he had preached 30,000 sermons. His hearers included not only the poor and the uneducated, but prominent English aristocrats and American statesmen such as David Hume and Benjamin Franklin. Christians today continue to take courage from Whitefield's humility and deep spirituality. A founder of Methodism, he yielded his leadership to John Wesley rather than risk splitting the movement, thus revealing his fervent commitment to the gospel of Christ rather than to personal plans or hopes.
Author
Arnold Dallimore who was pastor of the Baptist Church at Cottam, Ontario, for alost twenty-four years, was born in Canada of British parents. During his work for the B.Th. degree at Central Baptist Seminary, Toronto, his interest in Whitefield was awakened by the eminence given to him by all who had written on the History of Preaching. Yet though Whitefield was so often referred to as one of the greatest evangelists since the Apostles Dallimore's curiosity was the more aroused by the fact that so little detailed information on him was available and large areas of his life appeared to be virtually unknown. This commenced the long course of study and research now consummated in this definitive biography. The difficulties of the project were lightened by the author's discovery of material hitherto unknown, including a Diary of Whitefield's and a number of items of correspondence.
