R. Tudur Jones here provides an excellent introduction to the Protestant Reformation. He covers many popular characters, such as Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin, as well as many lesser known people. Rather than limiting his scope to the events in Germany, Switzerland, and France, he extends his survey to evaluate reforms that took place from Iceland to Poland, Wales to Spain. He gives careful attention to the historical events, theological ideas, and struggles of conscience which inflamed 16th-century Christianity. Jones’ work is remarkable in that he covers a breadth of information in a concise and readable manner.
