David Dickson (1821-1885), an elder in Scotland for 33 years, encourages ruling elders to fulfill the tasks for which they are ordained. He addresses the importance and qualifications of elders, followed by an explanation of their duties. It covers such topics as visitation, cases of discipline, church fellowship, the elder’s relation to the minister and session, and encouragements and discouragements elder’s might face. In this edition, George Kennedy McFarland and Philip Graham Ryken have written an introduction, updated the spelling and usage, given explanatory notes, and added study questions for personal reflection and group discussion.
