Timothy Dwight, D.D. (1752–1817), grandson of Jonathan Edwards and father of Sereno E. Dwight, was reading the Bible at the age of four and began teaching himself Latin at the age of six. Dwight served as a chaplain in the Continental Army in 1777–1778. He pastored the Greenfield Hill Congregational Church in Fairfield, Conn. from 1783–1795 and later served as president of Yale College from 1795–1817. Dwight is best known for his work Theology Explained and Defended. This two-volume selection of his sermons was originally published in 1828.
