Patrick Fairbairn (1805-1874), perhaps best known for his classic work on Typology of Scripture, was an outstanding scholar among 19th century Scottish Presbyterians. Fairbairn’s Opening Scripture gives valuable instruction on how to interpret the New Testament correctly. The first part of the treatise discusses several principles for interpreting the New Testament. The second part treats several particular subjects related to New Testament studies that are examples of the principles set forth in the first part. In the third part, he comments on the use of the Old Testament in the New. Throughout the book, Fairbairn gives prominence to the connection between the books Old and New Testaments.
