"It is death - the death of our Lord Jesus and the death common to us all - that has especially attracted my attention in Coverdale's work. Not only am I comforted by the encouraging content, the truth, that he declares and by the sympathetic tone with which he declares that truth. But I am pushed, as it were, in the direction of godly thoughts, words and actions, as Coverdale makes me aware of the urgency of my situation...I shall give only two examples. First, notice how Coverdale leads us as readers from the gospel's plain narrative of the conversations between Jesus and the penitent on the cross almost immediately to personal "fruit" or application to our own lives...Second, notice how Coverdale, though acknowledging our faltering faith, calls upon God to strengthen out faith as death becomes an increasing reality for us - an increasing reality, but not, praise Jesus, a victorious enemy. Coverdale follows the same pattern of doctrine and "fruit" in many of the wondrous prayers scattered through his work.- Dr. Nicholas P. Barker
