There are few books that I pick up and can't put down again. This new biography of McCheyne is one of them. I have always admired McCheyne for his Christ-centeredness, his love for true holiness, and his compassion for the common man. He was young, and died young, but he was aged in the Lord, and walked so intimately with his Savior that when a friend of Dr. Andrew Bonar met him for the first time, he excused himself to a private room. When Dr. Bonar went looking for him he discovered that his friend was weeping. Dr. Bonar knelt beside him and asked why he wept. "I never before met a man," he said (in reference to McCheyne), "so Jesus-like."This book clearly and fully describes the life and ministry of McCheyne like few others have. No doubt it will become the definitive work on the Scottish pastor for years to come. My only hope and prayer is that I, those whom I love, and all true Christians, will someday be able to say that they, too, were constrained by His love.
